Eligibility to apply for Canadian Experience Class

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is an immigration program for those who have worked in Canada for at least one year for Canada PR. Since 2015 its applications are processed under the Canada Immigration Express Entry System.

The government of Canada recognizes the deep pool of talented workers already working in Canada, and wants them to become permanent residents. These are therefore, individuals and families who have set down roots and made plans for the future in Canada.

Under this, there are three distinct advantages, and one possible disadvantage, under Express Entry.

Two major CEC Advantages

It requires at least one year of Canadian work experience. Moreover, this is a major factor under the CRS, which in turn provides benefits against other candidates in the pool. As the required documentation is minimal, Canadian Experience Class applications are processed within three to four months.

While the candidates under FSWC & FSTC are required to show proof of settlement funds. One under CEC is, however, not required to show the same.

Potential disadvantage: Even if you are eligible to apply under the Canadian Experience Class, there is no guarantee that you will be invited to do so. However, there are steps you may take to improve your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply.

CEC requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements. They must:

  • Obtained at least one year of work Experience. It can be skilled, professional, or technical within 36 months of the application date
  • Meet or surpass a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 5 (“initial intermediate”) or 7 (“adequate intermediate proficiency”). It will depend on the level of the job
  • Plan to live and work outside of the province of Quebec. Individuals with work experience in Quebec may apply to the Quebec Experience Class
  • Remain in Canada throughout the application process. However, the CEC is also open to individuals who are no longer in Canada, provided that they submit their application within three years of leaving their job in Canada
  • Met the minimum requirements. The CEC requirements are based on a pass or fail model.

How to Apply for the Canadian Experience Class

  • Step 1. Acquire a Canadian work permit and complete a year of work
  • Step 2: Meet eligibility criteria and create an Express Entry profile
  • Step 3: Receive an ITA
  • Step 4: Complete a medical, provide security background checks, and submit an e-application
  • Step 5: Receive confirmation of permanent resident status and get a PR card
